Birthday love to the San Diego Padres, awarded a team this day in 1968. They nearly wound up with this logo in 1985: pic.twitter.com/DQCs0EZGjS

I need to know the backstory on this. Ugliest looking Swinging Friar I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of Swinging Friars. We’ve even seen some Padres non-swinging Friars. Dodged a major bullet by not landing that logo. I’ve written a lot about Padres logos here on the 8-letter, and I’ve never seen that bad-boy before. So bad. Mr. Radom even tweeted that he’s seen color mockups of that logo with uniforms! Need to see these! Neeeeeeeeeed. Question: That mockup remind you of any other baseball logos you’ve seen before?
*update* – I asked Todd Radom about the prototype uniforms in color and he responded.
@LobShots I have actual photos of prototypes, sworn to secrecy. Seriously.

That Padres logo looks like it was designed by the same person who did The Hawaiians (WFL) logo. (http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/5885/Honolulu_Hawaiians/1974/Primary_Logo)
I can’t tell if you are being serious or goofing, but the proposed Padres logo looks nothing like the White Sox logo, apart from them both holding a bat. Padres is far better.
I can’t tell if you’re serious or goofing… I asked if it “reminds you of” anything… when I saw that Padres logo, the first thing I thought of was the Sox logo. Far from identical…. it simply reminded me of it.
Would be interesting to see the logo in color. Also, is it just me or does the ball depicted in the logo look like a tennis ball rather than a baseball?
it totally looks like a tennis ball.
