Creating a Personal “Top Ten Movies of All Time” List is Damn Near Impossible

All Top Ten lists are subjective. A Top Ten movie list is especially subjective. I didn’t realize how hard this would be. I’ve tried to make this list before, but I can never narrow it down to just ten, so I scrap it altogether. Then there’s always the question of whether or not you include comedies. I did. Then there’s the sequel and/or trilogy question. I’m firm on this one. You want the Lord of the Rings trilogy in there? That’s three spots. Are you really ready to commit three adventure fantasy movies to your top 10 list? Didn’t think so. Pick one. Then there’s the same argument you get for MVP in sports. Most valuable to their team? To the league? Or the best player? Is Casablanca a better movie than Dumb & Dumber? Sure. Did it make my list over Dumb & Dumber? No chance. This is my list. Casablanca can kiss my ass. It’s an endless debate.

When I asked the Lobshots team of writers (yes, there’s more than just me, BP) and you lobsters to send me some lists, I didn’t put any stipulations on it, I just wanted to see what you clowns came up with. I came to realize that the Lobshots demographic is primary white males in their 2o’s and 30’s. Shocker, I know. Our movie lists are defined by our age, obviously. If you’re extra cultured, your list can certainly transcend age. I realized that 7 of my 10 movies were released between 8th and 12th grade. Formidable years, much? These are the movies that shaped who I am today… for better or worse. Have there been “better” movies that have been released since 1997, when I graduated high school? Of course. But I was grown up (debatable, I know), so they didn’t mean as much to me as the movies on my list did. You dig?

BP’s Top Ten Movies of All Time

  1. Braveheart (1995)
  2. Shawshank Redemption (1994)
  3. Good Will Hunting (1997)
  4. Tombstone (1993)
  5. Princess Bride (1987)
  6. Dumb and Dumber (1994)
  7. Groundhog Day (1993)
  8. Godfather II (1974)
  9. Billy Madison (1995)
  10. Ace Ventura (1994)

I don’t have the time or energy to go through and explain why each of these movies is on my list, but there they are. The definitive list. Now it’s time to see which Lobshots writer your own list matches up best with… my small commentary at the end of each one, not their own.

  4. Braveheart
  5. Green Street Hooligans
  6. Ghostbusters
  7. Fight Club
  8. Wedding Crashers
  9. The Departed
  10. Lion King

Showman freaking LOVES Green Street Hooligans, can’t believe it wasn’t number 1. Great list though. I’m not mad at any of ’em.

Caster’s Top Ten Movies of All Time

  1. My Fair Lady
  2. Shawshank Redemption

  4. Star Wars
  5. Braveheart
  6. Back to the Future
  7. Forrest Gump

My Fair Lady? Never seen it, but c’mon. Number 1? Also, never seen The Descendants… otherwise, top notch list.

Mac’s Top Ten Movies of All Time

  1. Snatch
  2. Gangs of New York
  3. Tombstone
  4. Gladiator
  5. Young Guns
  6. Platoon
  7. Independence Day
  8. Super Troopers
  9. Braveheart
  10. Scarface

I barely remember Platoon. I was too young when I saw it. I tried to find a spot for Gangs of New York on my list too… just couldn’t. Can’t believe Independence Day made the cut. Haha.

Body’s Top Ten Movies of All Time

  1. Top Gun
  2. Rocky
  3. Sandlot
  4. Parenthood
  5. Love Actually
  6. American Psycho
  7. Shawshank Redemption
  8. Home Alone
  9. Goonies
  10. Swingers

Love Actually, huh Body? You definitely just won some points with the ladies. Love that Swingers made the list. Freaking love Swingers.

So, I’ve decided that all the other readers submissions that you sent in will be in a post next week. That will be awesome too. This one is long enough… As for the Lobshots writers’ list, it looks like Braveheart is the big winner. Rightfully so.
