Is Ryan Mathews a Top 10 NFL Player Under 25 years old?

I read two articles today. First one was on “Young guns: Top 10 NFL players under the age of 25“. The second one was “Ryan Mathews could be the No. 1 fantasy football back this year“. After the first read, I was baffled that Ryan Mathews was not on the list of top 10 NFL players under 25. There’s no way a guy that’s projected to possibly be a no. 1 fantasy pick isn’t even on the top 10 list. Hell, he’s not even on the “Just missed the cut” list they provided that includes another 10 players. Meaning, that article is stating that there are 20 players under 25 years old better than Ryan Mathews. No way. So, I googled, “Ryan Mathews age”, here’s what I got:

Ah… got it, that’s why we wasn’t on the list. He’s already 25. No harm, no foul. Right? So I sent out a tweet with the article, and the man himself clarified the situation.

Well, well, well… apparently google is liar. Ryan himself just confirmed that he’s 24. If you look at my google search, you can see there are two different birthdays listed. May 1, 1987 which would make him 25, and October 10, 1987 which makes him still 24. So, he should be on the list, right? Also not on the list? Our beloved Tim Tebow… this is not a popularity contest, folks. The list excluded incoming rookies, but here it is:

LB NaVorro Bowman, San Francisco 49ers (Age: 23) – WR A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals (Age: 23) – TE Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots (Age: 23) – RB LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles (Age: 23) – LB Von Miller, Denver Broncos (Age: 23) – QB Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (Age: 23) – DE Jason Pierre-Paul, New York Giants (Age: 23) – C Maurkice Pouncey, Pittsburgh Steelers (Age: 22) – DE Aldon Smith, San Francisco 49ers (Age: 22) – QB Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions (Age: 24)

Here’s the Just missed the cut list:

Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (24), Bengals DT Geno Atkins (24), Seahawks FS Earl Thomas (23), Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson (21), Falcons WR Julio Jones (23), Bengals QB Andy Dalton (24), Redskins DE Ryan Kerrigan (23), Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall (24), Browns CB Joe Haden (23), Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (23).

There ya have it. Twenty dudes. No Ryan Mathews. Rubbish if you ask me. Maybe the author was tricked by google too? Is that the only explanation? Also, I don’t know what it means, but I’m totally fine with being Ryan Mathews’ “sonzeenie”

Nice job getting Matthews to tweet back at you (and according to Google, you are officially the only “sonzeenie” in the world). I hope Matthews busts out next year. I think he could be the top fantasy player this season. I also think that 10 fumbles in 2 years means that you’re a no go for top 20 players under 25. Sorry, make that 10 fumbles and Mike Tolbert’s touchdown dance.

If I take off my rose colored Chargers glasses, I can see how Ryan wouldn’t make the top 10. A lot of his value is still locked up in potential which he hasn’t yet realized. I fully expect a huge year, but he hasn’t been as good as those first ten players. As for the second group, I would put him above Patrick Peterson, Dez Bryant, Ryan Kerrigan, and definitely Rashard Mendenhall. But those are sexier names than Ryan Mathews. But’s content typically sucks anyways.
