A San Diego Woman Was Shot and Killed… With a Cannonball

No, this is not the actual cannon from the shooting

EAST COUNTY — Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 33-year-old woman who was killed when a cannon fired by her husband sent a cannonball into her Potrero home early Tuesday.

Authorities were called to the home in the Twin Lakes Resort mobile home park on Potrero Valley Road north of Campo Road about 12:15 a.m., Cal Fire Capt. Mike Mohler said.

When they arrived they found the woman dead from injuries she suffered after the projectile slammed into her home, Mohler said.

Investigators talked to two men who said that they had been working on the cannon when it went off, Mohler said.

One of the men was injured in the blast and taken to a hospital for treatment, the captain said.

Sheriff’s detectives are handling the investigation. The name of the woman has not been released.

A woman was killed while sleeping in this trailer in Potrero early Tuesday morning, March 6th, after being hit by debris from a shot accidentally fired from a home made cannon outside of her home by a man who said he was her husband. He was also injured in the blast and taken to the hospital. A child in the trailer was not inured. (Photo by John Gibbins)

In other breaking news, Captain Hook had his hand bit off by an alligator… and One Eyed Willy forced two deckhands accused of stealing to walk the plank. WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?! This is San Diego… right here in the good ole 21st century. A woman seriously lost her life because she was shot with a cannon!? Losing a life is no joke… this is a sad and tragic story. So sad and tragic that is almost completely unbelievable. No way some dude and his buddy were “working” on a cannon, only to have it go off… blast a cannonball into his mobile home, and kill his wife. You cannot make this stuff up, folks. I repeat. A CANNON. So freaking bizarre. Prayers to her family, and the husband if he’s innocent… which I have to believe he is, because if you’re looking to murder your wife, I gotta believe there are firearms out there with better accuracy.

While we’re at it, prayers for me too because when I saw the headline to this story, aside from pirates… all I could think of is this: “Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention. I’ve just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story. I need all of you, to stop what you’re doing and listen.”

I’m the worst, I know.

He was probably just making his deluxe double wide into a to-scale replica of the ‘Black Pearl’. Quit giving Cletus here a hard time, BP.

  2. Michael says:

Are they awaiting a ballistics report to determine if that was in fact the canon that killed the woman?

  3. Dan says:

Is that a picture of the actual cannon? Looks like a 3″ ordnance rifle.
Probably would have fired an elongated (bullet-like) shell, rather than a cannonball.

  4. Cohner says:

Once I read “mobile home”, all my questions were answered.
