It’s a funny thing, Groundhog Day. As I prepared to write a blog about whether or not our lil buddy, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow today… (he did, if you care) I got to thinking, “I think I’ve done a Groundhog Day post before. How’s that possible though? LobShots hasn’t been around for a year.” Well, suck me sideways…I stand corrected. It was my 4th blog ever. That means that LobShots is, as of last week, one year old. I missed our own one year birthday. Sunuva... Made me wonder though: have I stayed true to my LobShots roots? I think so. Do I have anything more to say about Groundhog Day that I didn’t already say a year ago? Nope. Nothing. And let’s be honest… the readership during the first week of LobShots consisted of Showman and my friends only…so, like 35 people total, or 8. You lobsters have grown considerably in size since then… at least double. So, in honor of our first birthday, here’s what I said for our fourth blog ever, titled “Don’t drive angry. Don’t drive angry.” All of it (minus the shadow and the TBS TV lineup) rings true today:
Listen, here on the west coast, nobody gives a crap about Punxsutawney Phil or Gobbler’s Knob. Turns out the little critter didn’t see his shadow this morning, so we’re gonna have an early Spring. Sweet. So what. So, if I don’t care…why write about it? Here’s why: the movie. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis teaming up for Groundhog Day in 1993 is the only reason I care about February 2nd. Murray is genius and the story of redemption hidden within this brilliant comedy makes it the near perfect movie. Here’s a couple of ways this movie needs to be honored. You know how TBS runs “A Christmas Story” on loop all day on Christmas day? Why the freak don’t they do that with Groundhog Day today? Makes no sense. I just checked the TBS lineup… here’s a few of the highlights for today’s schedule… reruns of “Yes, Dear”, “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”, “According to Jim”, “Meet the Browns”, “Are we There Yet?” amongst others. I want to kick myself in the neck at the thought of watching any of those today instead of Groundhog Day. They are blowing it. Oh, and as for radio, maybe some stations already do this, I dunno… but every station in America should have “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher playing at 6:00AM.
Every station. Hard rock, Jazz, Talk Radio, Top 20 Hits, I don’t care… have some respect for the genius of this movie. Oh, and if you haven’t seen this movie, flick yourself in the ear, and go rent it. If you have seen the movie, and didn’t like it… leave this blog right now, and don’t ever come back… you’re no longer welcome here.
Below is a picture of Ned Ryerson, because I love him.
To many more years of crushing the interweb…
