The Busy Bolts – Chargers Signings

Photographed by: Peter Read Miller/SI

It’s been a madhouse around Chargers park as training camp gets underway, with new guys getting signed left and right. If you want up to the minute coverage, check out the boys over at Bolts From the Blue, as they’ve been keeping on top of things pretty well.

Bob Sanders had already agreed to a deal. LOVE that he’s on the squad. Stay healthy please. The big news of course is Eric Weddle and his monster contract. $40mill over 5 years. That makes him the highest paid safety in NFL history. Damn. Good for Eric. Good for the Chargers. Did they overpay for him? Probably. Am I ok with it? Definitely. The other big name sign was old man Spikes. Takeo Spikes is most certainly on the downside of his career, but hey, the dude eats BBQ squirrel, so he’s cool with me.

Richie Rich

Jeromy Clary’s back. I support that. You know he was the only O-Lineman to play every offensive snap last season? Randy McMichael is a very serviceable back up for Antonio Gates, so I’m all about him coming back. Nice. Jacques Cesaire is back for two more seasons. That’s cool. I like Jacques. Antwan Barnes signed on for two more years as well. I’m not as excited about this. Just have a feeling we may have already seen the best of Barnes, and it wasn’t that great. Time will tell. Our second pick in the draft was CB Marcus Gilchrist, and he’s agreed to a four year deal. This is fantastic. Jammer’s not getting any younger. They signed a few more draft picks: LB Jonas Mouton (2nd round), RB Jordan Todman (6th round), T Stephen Schilling (6th round) and LB Andrew Gachkar (7th round).

The big loser? Buster Davis. 1st round bust. Sad day for Buster, he’s gone. Time to move on for Bolt fans. Still waiting for Corey Liuget. Sign, baby, sign. I’m sure I missed a few updates in there, but overall I’m happy with what the Bolts have down these past few days. Can’t wait to get out there and see Rivers whippin’ that ball down the field to VJ.
